League One 2013/14 Preview

Well here we are again, 4 days to go, the countdown well and truly on and almost over.  A new exhilarating Skybet League One season awaits,  it's the time where every single player, fan, manager and member of staff can dream about what is possible in the 9 months ahead.  Last season will be hard to match for the 24 League One outfits, with last season seeing Doncaster climbing into England's second tier to join Bournemouth at the last minute, leaving The Bees of Brentford heartbroken and to fight it out in the playoffs with Sheffield United, Yeovil and Swindon.  The season then concluded with Yeovil prevailing from a closely fought final with Brentford.

This season we welcome Peterborough United, Bristol City and Wolverhampton Wanderers down from the championship, with Gillingham, Rotherham United, Port Vale and Bradford City joining us from League Two.

Today's preview will feature all 24 teams.

Bradford City

The new League One season sees Phil Parkinson's Bradford side back in League one for the first time since the 2006/07 season.  Last season was historic for Bradford, making their way to the League Cup final, where they came against a very strong Swansea side.  The Bantams made it back to Wembley for the League Two play-off final where they saw off Northampton Town 3-0.
The Bantams gained a League One spot via the play-offs

Bradford have not made many changes to their squad, bringing in wide man Mark Yeates from Watford and midfielder Jason Kennedy from Rochdale, both on free transfers, with  Matt Duke moving on to pastures new with a move to Northampton.  The most important thing this summer for Bradford will be holding on to top scorer Nahki Wells, with the striker a target for a host of clubs including fellow League One newcomers Peterborough.

I believe the season will be testing for Bradford, but they will definitely avoid the drop, consolidating in League One, with the likes of ex Liverpool defender Stephen Darby, midfield enforcer and captain Gary Jones, Kyel Reid and target man James Hanson, partnering Nahki Wells upfront.

Brentford

Brentford will definitely looking to go one better than the last campaign. Once Marcello Trotta saw his penalty strike the Griffin Park crossbar, Bees hearts were broken, they overcame Swindon in the play-off semi final, however could not overcome a very well organised Yeovil team at the home of English football. Coming so close last season, Brentford wanted to make sure they have enough to do the job this season, bringing in a wealth of talent.
Brentford finished their 2012/13 season with disappointment

Uwe Rosler has added Will Grigg, Connor McAleny and Martin Fillo from Walsall, Everton and Viktoria Plzeƈ respectably, with the latter two both on loan.  All being attacking options, to try and ensure they have no problem in the final third. George Saville has also been brought in on loan from Chelsea.

Defensively, Brentford have brought in young goalkeeper Jack Bonham from Watford, experienced defender Alan McCorkmack from Swindon, and re-signed Jake Bidwell, making his 2 loan spells permanent, also from Everton. Rosler has also acquired the services of Javi Venta, a young full back from La Liga champions Barcelona.

Moving away from Brentford is young starlet Harry Forrester, the winger moving to the Championship to join up with Paul Dickov's Doncaster.  With Simon Moore being relinquished to Premier League newcomers Cardiff on a free transfer, the reason for signing Bonham.

Possessing top scorer Clayton Donaldson combined with  Farad El-Alagui, Jonathan Douglas Toumani Diagouraga and skipper Tony Craig, Rosler looks to have put together an even stronger side than last season, one that definitely looks capable of going that extra step and firing the west London club into the Championship.

Bristol City

After a nightmare of a season in 2012/13, Bristol City have found themselves back in the third tier for the first time in six seasons.  Last year was one to forget for the Robins, and I'm sure they'll be desperate to get back to the Championship at the first attempt.  Sean O'Driscoll was appointed in January and is a very good, well respected manager. Treated unfairly by Nottingham Forest is the view of many, O'Driscoll will be looking forward to showing what he can do.

Following the drop, the usual upheaval of players started. Farmed out were Tom Heaton to Lancashire side Burnley,  strike pairing Jonathan Stead and top scorer Steven Davies to Huddersfield and Bolton, Ipswich came and raided the reds, taking academy product Cole Skuse, goalkeeper Dean Gerken and Paul Anderson.  Finally, Barnsley took Lewin Nyatanga off the books of Bristol City.

Star men Albert Adomah (left) and Sam Baldock (right) will
be key to City's season
Don't be fooled into thinking that no quality has come in however.  O'Driscoll has moved to snap up former England u21 international goalkeeper Frank Fielding from Derby, former Arsenal youngster Jay Emmanuel-Thomas moves from Ipswich to Ashton Gate. Also arriving are Scott Wagstaff from Charlton, young left back Derrick Williams from Aston Villa, highly rated Aden Flint from swindon and veteran midfielder Brian Howard from relegated Portsmouth.

Bristol City have also retained captain Liam Fontaine, ex West Ham man Sam Baldock, Australia international Neil Kilkenny, ex Manchester City youngster Greg Cunningham and sought after wide man Albert Adomah.

The key for Bristol City will be putting last seasons disappointment behind them and focusing on a promotion push, as they have the manager and the squad to challenge at the right end of the league.

Carlisle United

Last season was one that didn't live up to expectation for the Cumbrians, 2011/12 promised so much as they missed out on the play-offs on the final day, but a season of disappointment followed.  Relegation scares combined with calls for manager Abbot's sacking left the club in dispute.  There were few highs last season for Carlisle.

David Amoo needs to prove his
worth this season.
I don't believe this season will bring much more for Greg Abbot's side, with Adam Collin being shipped to Rotherham and Andy Welsh moving to Scunthorpe.

In for Carlisle are former Newcastle academy player Lewis Guy from Scottish side St.Mirren and former Preston, Tranmere, Bury and MK Dons winger David Amoo who is yet to prove himself at League One level.

2013/14 doesn't promise much, mid-table obscurity I imagine at best for Carlisle.

Colchester United

Last season was tough for Colchester as they played Russian roulette with the relegation zone all season. This inevitably cost John Ward his job and Joe Dunne took over at the back end of September.  But importantly for the U's they escaped to fight another season in the third tier.  Dunne will be looking to avoid a repeat of last seasons antics and make sure the Essex club are a lot more secure this season.

To make this happen, Colchester have brought in young MK Dons full back Mason Spence on a free transfer, along side Ryan Dickson, also on a free, from League One new boys Bradford, with Arsenal pair Craig Eastmond and Sanchez Watt who make their loan signings permanent. Another 2 new faces at the Weston Holmes Community Stadium are goalkeeper Sam Walker who joins for a second loan spell from Chelsea, with fellow Chelsea defender Daniel Pappoe, also on loan.

The new faces join the current squad that features stalwart Magnus Okuonghae, veteran striker Clinton Morrison, former West Ham man Freddie Sears and the forward line is completed with Jabo Ibehre.
Colchester will be looking for a more positive season.

Although Colchester have made efforts to strengthen at the back, I think they lack quality in midfield and a deadly striker, therefore another battle against the drop could well be on.

Coventry City

Well, what a summer for Coventry, administration, debts, confusion. Coventry City are in tatters.  The sky blues look destined to be plying their trade at Sixfields, the home of Northampton.  How many fans will make the 35 mile journey every week is unknown, however their feelings clear. This could easily turn into a Wimbledon FC situation, which I think nobody would like to see again.

But onto the football. Last season looked destined for disaster. In the relegation zone for the early part of the season, Mark Robins took over and Coventry looked nailed on for a top 6 place, until the boys in blue were dumped into administration, destroying those promotion dreams and leaving them in mid table.

The off-field fiasco as per usual as spilled over onto the field. Coventry placed under a transfer embargo
The Sky Blues need to put the off-field problems to
one side
meaning no new recruits for new manager Steven Pressley.

The lack of finances obviously means the door opens to certain faces too, with Richard Wood, Jordan Stewart, Stephen Elliot, David Bell, Nathan Cameron and Danny Philliskirk made surplus to requirements. Cody McDonald had his contract terminated and moves back to his spiritual home, Gillingham.

That leaves Coventry a squad including highly rated goalkeeper Joe Murphy, Cyrus Christie, John Fleck, Carl Baker, Adam Barton, Franck Moussa and Leon Clarke, who all all very capable at League One level.

For the season ahead, another season of off field controversy looks set, but I imagine City will be just outside the playoff spots, but with rumours of a 15 point deduction in the pipelines that could make it increasingly difficult.

Crawley Town

A second season beckons for Crawley in League One after an impressive first season in the third tier.  Following consecutive promotions, it could have been hard for the red devils but they coped very well and
claimed a 10th placed finish last season.

This season The Sussex club will be looking to build under young manager Richie Barker, pushing for the playoffs if they can, but this will be difficult in my opinion.

Not much movement, but new faces at the Broadfield include the eye-opening signing of Andy Drury from Ipswich making his loan move permanent and defender James Hurst from West Bromwich Albion.

Walking away from West Sussex are the released Shaun Cooper and Lateef Ellford-Alliyu, Mustapha Dumbuya who moves to fellow League One outfit Notts County, released David Hunt has been snapped up by League Two Oxford and Matt Sparrow who has returned to his beloved Scunthorpe, where he began his career.
The Red Devils will be looking to build from 2012/13

I think Crawley will not make any progress this season, but at the same time will not go too far backwards, as in their ranks include last seasons top scorer Billy Clarke and veteran striker Gary Alexander.

Crewe Alexandra

A quiet season for Crewe, their first season back in League One, and without Academy Graduate Nick Powell was a consolidation season, finishing 13th. The Alex added a trophy to their season, with their second Wembley win in two seasons, beating League Two Southend 2-0 in the JPT.

Steve Davis has done a very good job at Crewe and this summer has added midfielder Anthony Grant from Stevenage, versatile left sided player Lee Molyneux from Accrinton Stanley, right back Thierry Audel from non-league Macclesfield and Sheffield born former Lincoln striker Vadaine Oliver who scored 14 goals in the Conference last term.

Crewe released two youngsters this summer, Harry Clayton and Brendon Daniels, still both yet to find new clubs, however skipper Luke Murphy was captured by the massive Leeds United, which will be a big loss for the railwaymen.

Crewe's squad is littered with talent, with the likes off Max Clayton, top scorer Mathias Pogba and Ajay Leitch-Smith.

Main man Mathias Pogba will look to fire again
Steve Davis has assembled a young and vibrant squad at Gresty Road and there is no doubt as time goes on his squad will get better and better. A top half finish should definitely be the aim for Crewe, as well as the opportunity to defend their football league trophy crown.

Gillingham

Gillingham looked to be running away with League Two last season, but got over the line in the end, and come into League One with the 'champions' label.  Martin Allen has previously been given the tag of just trying to keep teams up, and by firing Gillingham to the top of the football league's bottom tier, he has defied his critics and I believe that can only be a good thing.
Gillingham had plenty to smile about last term.

Leaving the Gills is academy graduate Jack Payne, who's loan was made permanent at Darren Ferguson's Peterborough.  Also departing is experienced Andy Frampton and Deon Burton, who move to AFC Wimbledon and Scunthorpe respectively. 24 year old midfielder Lewis Montrose has also been transferred to League Two's York City.

Allen has brought lots of new faces, some familiar, to the Priestfield stadium, familiar faces include Cody McDonald who scored 29 goals in 48 appearances for the Gills in two loan spells and Adebayo Akinfenwa who netted 11 times in 44 games back in 2010-11. Boosting the front line further is former loanee Antonio German who has signed on for the Kent club. Midfielder Amine Linganzi has arrived from Accrington also.

Gillingham's squad includes a wealth of third tier experience with Leon Legge, Stuart Nelson, pacey winger Myles Weston and Charlie Lee, with top scorer Danny Kedwell and Steven Gregory.

Martin Allen should be looking to at least survive, with Gillingham's last League One visit ending in an immediate return to League Two without a single away win. Their squad is solid if nothing spectacular, and should stay up.

Leyton Orient

Slade is very experienced at League One
level
Leyton Orient exceeded expectations last year, finishing agonisingly just outside the top 6.  Their mid season form rocketed and they shot up the league, which nobody expected. Under experienced manager Russell Slade, with the likes of goalkeeper Jamie Jones, winger Dean Cox and ex premier league striker and the deadly Kevin Lisbie, be under no illusions of the ability of the East-London club.

A clearout has well and truly been underway however at the Matchroom stadium releasing a mountain of experience including  Charlie MacDonald, Martin Rowlands, Leon McSweeney, Jimmy Smith, Michael Symes and Anthony Griffith, all over the age of 26. Also released are goalkeeper Lee Butcher and youngster Afolabi Obafemi, a total of 9 players.

To replace these players Slade has brought in versatile Frenchmen Romain Vincelot, Shaun Batt who was at the O's on loan at the back end of last season, midfielder Yohan Lasimant for his first season in English football and released West Ham stopper Jake Larkins.

The key to Orient's season will be to make sure they can deal with losing the amount of experience they have, I think it will be a quiet, mid table season for Orient.

MK Dons

Keeping Stephen Gleeson fit is
imperative to MK Dons' season.
MK Dons' highlight of 2012/13 was their FA Cup run, the conquering of fierce rivals AFC Wimbledon, championship side Sheffield Wednesday and the stuffing Premier League basement boys QPR. Karl Robinson's sides' leauge season however, was one to forget, one of the promotion favourites were in the mix till December, when key midfielder Stephen Gleeson suffered a broken foot.  This highlighted the Dons' lack of depth, resulting in a horrific run of form dropping the men from MK1 to 14th.  The season finished well with the Dons narrowly missing out on a play-off place, finishing 8th.

Karl Robinson needs to increase depth in his squad, and has moved to bring in versatile Watford defender Lee Hodson and midfielder Ben Reeves from Southampton, both for free. Palace youngster Jason Banton has been added to boost in the wide areas and Patrick Bamford returns for a second loan spell from Chelsea.

Leaving Stadium:MK are the released Mathias Doumbe, joining him is Scottish international Gary MacKenzie and young player of the season Adam Chicksen who move to Blackpool and Brighton in the second tier. Fans favourite Ryan Lowe also left, determined to be nearer to home, and opting for Tranmere as his new home.

Still at the Dons' is highly rated Shaun Williams, long serving captain Dean Lewington, midfield star Stephen Gleeson, joint top scorer Dean Bowditch and club record goalscorer Izale Mcleod.  Partenered by ex Manchester United man Luke Chadwick, pacey winger Daniel Powell and former England international Alan Smith, the Dons' definitely have the capability of progressing to the Championship this season.

Notts County

County's season petered out in 2012/13, after being in the playoffs in November, a horrific run of form saw them drop off massively and cost manager Keith Curle his job.  County would never recover, and a quiet season followed.  Chris Kiwomya took over from Curle and his first full season of management awaits, as his team kick off the football league season on Friday away at Sheffield United.

County lost Alan Judge, the player nicknamed 'The Irish Messi' to Blackburn, which will be a big loss to the Nottingham club, but have brought in David Bell and Mark Fotheringham to bulk up in the middle.  Also arriving at Meadow Lane are Danny Haynes, released from Charlton and was sought after by many clubs.  Kiwomya has done well to acquire Haynes and I believe he will definitely do well in the third tier this coming term. Finally, Mustapha Dumbuya has arrived to help the depth in the full back region.

Is Danny Haynes the final piece for County's jigsaw?
Following Judge out of the world's oldest football league club is Jeff Hughes, who scored 20 goals in 89 appearances for the Magpies from the left of midfield and the released captain Neal Bishop, defenders Damion Stewart, Julian Kelly and youngster Jake Wholey .Academy graduate Liam Mitchell and Hamza Bencherif also had their contracts terminated.

If nothing else, Kiwomya's side will be searching for consistency, which deserted them for the last campaign, and a push for the top half, maybe a few people's bet for the playoffs.

Oldham Athletic

Oldham survived the trap door by the skin of their teeth last season, the highlight of their season being their unbelievable FA Cup run, where they defied the odds to beat Nottingham Forest and the 5 times European champions liverpool, before succumbing to Everton in a replay at Goodison park.  But this season they need to concentrate on the league and with the youngest manager in the football league at the helm, things could be on the up for the Latics, but by losing midfield general and fans favourite Dean Furman combined with their wall at the back Jean-Yves Mvoto, it's not going to be any easier for the lads from Lancashire. It's been a summer of comings and goings at Boundary Park.

Lee Johnson has added the experienced Charlie MacDonald, youngster Jordan Clarke-Harris from Peterborough to try and add goals to his squad, ex Norwich man Korey Smith and former Brighton academy player Anton Rodgers to the midfield, with Norwegian Sidney Schmitz on the wing for his first season in England.

Athletic will be searching for more good times in 2013/14
Leaving Boundary Park are FA Cup hero and man mountain Matt Smith and Alex Cisak who have both stepped up to the Championship with Leeds and Burnley.  Released are Lee Croft, Robbie Simpson, Dean Bouzanis, Dan Taylor and Liam Jacob.

Oldham have managed to keep Jose Baxter which will boost their survival chances rapidly, with experienced defender Cliff Byrne and ex Peterborough midfielder James Wesolowski still at the club.

I firmly believe that Lee Johnson will have to work miracles to keep Oldham up this season and they are in for a dogfight over the next nine months.

Peterborough United

Peterborough's last minute relegation was surreal
Peterborough managed to fall into the relegation when that was the last thing that looked possible, surrendering a 2-1 lead in the final moments against Premier League new boys Crystal Palace. Just like Brentford, the season ended in disaster and heart break and it will be hard for the Posh to get over.  However like so many of the 24 League One outfits, they'll be expecting nothing less than promotion.

With a squad that contains the likes of Gabriel Zakuani, Danny Swanson, Grant McCann, Tommy Rowe, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Tyrone Barnett the boys in blue are looking in good shape ahead of the new season.  Adding just one player to their squad in Jack Payne from Gillingham.

Leaving London Road is Dwight Gayle, who took the Championship by storm.  Losing Gayle was inevitable, but also was the hefty fee that came with it, in the region of 4 million pounds that was added to Darragh MacAnthony's bank balance. Joining Gayle out of Peterborough was right back Mark Little and fans favourite and club legend George Boyd who join promoted Hull City in the promised land.

Promotion and nothing less will be the aim for Darren Ferguson and his men, and I believe they will definitely be up and around the top 2, with their well know open football style.  The quality and experience they possess will be far too much for most League One sides this season.

Port Vale

After 5 seasons in League Two, dogged by financial trouble, Port Vale lead by Micky Adams with dynamite striker Tom Pope leading the line, Port Vale were promoted back to League One.

Port Vale will be looking to consolidate in League One and to do this have captured the signatures of Ex-Cheltenham wide man Kaid Mohamed, Chris Robertson from Preston, the versatile Gavin Tomlin from Southend, former Arsenal youngster Liam Chilvers, Chris Lines, who had a taste of League One on loan at the MK Dons at the back end of last season and the return of Anthony Griffith for his third spell at the Stoke-on-Trent club. Final signing for the Valliants is Carl Dickinson from Watford.

Leaving Vale park are the released Ryan Burge, winger Ashley Vincent and Clayton McDonald.

There is no doubt the key to Port Vale's survival is Tom Pope, but he is backed up by the likes of Lee Hughes and Ben Williamson to add to their prowess up front. Other assets to Vale are Doug Loft and defenders John McCombe and Darren Purse who have the experience to guide Port Vale through the next 9 months.

I think Port Vale will have a quiet season, and finish in the lower reaches of mid table.

Preston North End

Last summer saw one of transition at Deepdale, with manager Graham Westley appointing virtually a whole new squad.  Unfortunately for the Preston faithful and Westley himself, the squad never gelled and Westley was relieved of his duties with Preston in a lowly 17th.  However ex Leeds and Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson came in and the difference was immediate. A few more draws than Grayson would have intended, but thanks to him, Preston were steered clear of any possible danger.

Stuart Beavon will be looking for more
goals in 2013/14
This season the lilywhites will once again be looking to press for a top 6 finish, and they have reason to be optimistic, with not many additions to the squad, however former England international Kevin Davies has arrived on a free transfer from Bolton, with the promising Declan Rudd returning for a second loan spell.  A good acquisition for Grayson's side is Tom Clarke, the former Huddersfield man was with Grayson at the Terriers and is a proven League One footballer. The final addition is Chris Humphrey, the former Shrewsbury Town winger joining from Motherwell.

Lee Trundle has been released, after a injury hit season that showed little. Also leaving are forward Andrew Proctor, Rhys Taylor, without making an appearance and defender Luke Foster.

Overall I think with Grayson at the helm, and the likes of centre back Bailey Wright, Stuart Beavon who will be looking to impress more than he did in his debut season, midfielder Nicky Wroe,  wide man Jeffrey Monakana and young star Will Hayhurst the Preston supporters can dream this season, and they are definitely in contention for a top 6 finish.

Rotherham United

Here we focus on the last of the promoted sides. Rotherham, another club that has has it's fair share of financial difficulties, after being on the brink of extinction, finally a season to remember for the Millers, their first season in their brand new stadium delivered a trophy, and a gateway into League One. The scenes on the final day depicted a club that hadn't seen many good times recently.  But euphoria aside, the Millers need to concentrate on staying in the third tier.
Promotion sparked wild scenes at the New York stadium

To make way for more quality, seasoned pro Nicky Hunt, Ian Sharps, Dale Tongue and Alec Denton all deemed unneeded at Rotherham, and Johnny Mullins leaving for an undisclosed fee to Chris Wilder's Oxford.

To aid their quest for survival, proven goalscorer Matt Tubbs has joined on loan from Bournemouth, Michael Tidser joins for 50,000 pounds from Scottish side Morton, David Worrall arrives from relegated, cash strapped Bury as does Joe Skarz, who makes his loan from the Shakers Permanent. Goalkeeper Adam Collin arrives from Carlisle and Danny Hylton, one of the shining lights in Aldershot's dysmal 2012/13 season also comes into the squad.

Rotherham will be looking to finish as high up as possible, I cannot see them challenging the playoffs, however mid table may be within their grasp.

Sheffield United

Sheffield United.  The nearly men of League One over the past couple of seasons.  2 playoff campaigns, a penalty shootout defeat in a final and a narrow semi-final loss the next year.  The Blades often build their loyal and large fan base up, and let them down.  Widely tipped for a top two finish, the men Bramall Lane challenged, but came up short, therefore having to settle for a play off place.
A second failed play-off campaign was hard to take
for the Blades

This season sees a change in management at Sheffield United with David Wier getting his first chance in management, replacing the fired Danny Wilson. Prolific Falkirk striker Lyle Taylor was brought in, with one of Walsall's star men from last season Febian Brandy, Stephen McGinn from Watford to strengthen in the midfield and Sean McGinty, the last player to ever have his contract terminated by Sir Alex Ferguson, joining to bolster the defensive option.  Promising Liverpool youngster Connor Coady also will have a loan spell under Weir, who has done a good job in the transfer market this summer. How they will all bed is still to be seen.

Out of the Bramall Lane gates go the well known Dave Kitson and Richard Cresswell, Barry Robson, Seasoned campaigner Danny Coyne, defender Lescinel Jean-Francois, Matty Harriott and academy graduate Jordan Chappell.

Still at Sheffield United is highly rated young stopper George Long, solid centre back pairing Neil Collins and Harry Maguire, midfield workmen Michael Doyle and Kevin McDonald, with set piece specialist Tony McMahon.

Not as widely tipped as last season, but with the roar of the Kop at Bramall Lane Sheffield United will be very hard to beat, especially at home, and will be up there again with the powerful, strong squad assembled by new man Wier.

Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury enjoyed an adequate season after promotion into League One, with long-serving manager Graham Taylor. This will be a season of consolidation for the Shrews, making sure they can avoid the drop.

Shrewsbury could struggle this season
To try to ensure survival, new to Greenhous Meadow are experienced Danny Coyne, Tamika Mkandawire and Dave Winfield, all to strengthen at the back. Added to that is right-back James Tavernier on loan, who impressed at MK Dons in his spell there from Newcastle. Further up the pitch, Akwasi Asante has been loaned from Birmingham City for first team experience.

Leaving the Shropshire club is Mark Wright and Marvin Morgan who could be big losses for the Shrews but that will be found out in time.

In conclusion, I think it could be a tough season for Shrewsbury, being relegation candidates, however being optimistic they could also finish in the lower mid table.

Stevenage Borough

Following a dramatic slide town the table last season, Gary Smith was relieved of his duties and was replaced by Graham Westley. Westley and Stevenage are like two peas in a pod.  Guiding the club to mid table obscurity and could start to build for this season fairly early.

It was a dramatic rise for Stevenage, who almost succeeded in 3 consecutive promotions, which has never been seen before.

Graham Westley has so far added Jimmy Smith, who played 150 games for Leyton Orient in an attacking midfield position, Sam Wedgbury, a defender who has made the step up from non-league, Simon Heslop who has been captured from Oxford and Oumare Tounkara, a player that will be looking for a settled home.

Westley has brought the Borough players together
Departing the LAMEX are club legend and ex-captain Mark Roberts, who played almost 200 games for the Borough, Anthony Grant after just one season and ex West Ham defender Bondz N'Gala.

Westley has done an astonishing job at Stevenage in the past. However I believe that this will be his toughest challenge yet. The lack of finances and low crowds at Stevenage will mean it will be increasingly harder for them to maintain League One status each year, and could be relegation contenders this season.

Swindon Town

Swindon will be hoping for a lot less uneventful season in my opinion. Where there is Di Canio, there is usually chaos and that was true in Swindon's case. His departure, the breaking in, all comical for the outsider, nightmare for a Swindon fanatic. Then the money problems, almost administration, a transfer embargo, it was mad at the County Ground last season, and that was just off the pitch!
Swindon's Wembley hopes were dashed at the last minute

On the pitch, a very good Swindon side, talent across the pitch and very well organised and hard to break down. Getting to the play-offs was a good achievement for Town after a promotion the season before. They will have been disappointed not to beat Brentford but it was still a good season none the less.

This season will be more challenging for any club looking to push for promotion, the 3 relegated sides definitely possessing more firepower than the three sides that left the division.

Due to the financial constraints at Swindon, players have had to go. Matt Ritchie being the first back in January, but this summer, Aden Flint has been sold to Bristol City for 300,000 pounds, Gary Roberts was released to decrease the wage bill, club captain Alan McCormack moved onto pastures new at rivals Brentford, Simon Ferry departed as did prolific striker James Collins, moving to Scotland.

To cover the loss of these types of quality players, Swindon have looked to Spurs, signing 5 of their young players, which are Massimo Luongo for his second loan spell, Grant Hall, Alex Pritchard and Ryan Mason all on loan, accompanied by Nathan Byrne and Jack Barthram permanently. Also signed is dead ball specialist Ryan Harley following his release from Brighton.

Quality is still within the Swindon dressing room though, goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, Andy Williams, experienced Darren Ward and Troy Archibald-Henville are still at the County Ground.

Due to their lack of experience, and the quality they've lost, I think promotion is too much to ask for Swindon this season, and mid table will be more realistic for Swindon.  Primarily, they need to find and a new manager, and ensure the turmoil comes to an end.

Tranmere Rovers

Ronnie Moore's men were the surprise package of the first half of last season. Looking as if they were going to run away with the League.  But that all stopped. Promotion form turned into dreadful results meaning Rovers finished 11th.

This season Rovers, like Notts County, will be searching for consistency, with the likes of stalwart Owain Fon-Williams, Ian Goodison and Andy Robinson combined with the new signings of forward Ryan Lowe, who has been scoring for fun in pre season. Akpo Sodje has also arrived at Prenton Park, to give Ronnie Moore attacking options.  In defence, Moore has boosted with Evan Horwood from Hartlepool and Stephen Foster, released by Bristol city. His final signing has been Chris Atkinson, a young midfielder on loan from Huddersfield.  Moore clearly showing his intent to strengthen every area in his squad.

I think Tranmere will finish slightly lower than last season, with consistency needed, in mid table.

Tranmere can not afford to lack consistancy

Walsall

Walsall were again one of the surprise packages of last season. With a young squad, they had nothing to fear, putting in performance after performance, and almost breaking into the top six.

With Will Grigg, Jamie Paterson and Febian Brandy to contend with, defences were taken apart, but all have been captured by bigger clubs, leaving Walsall fans devastated.
The Saddlers will have to cope with the loss of 3 key men

Dean Smith has been one of the best managers in League One in a long time in my opinion and has therefore signed Romain Sawyers from neighbours  West Brom, Milan Lalkovic from Chelsea, a striker that has a lot to live up to after his striking predecessors at the Banks' stadium. To assist him is Troy Hewitt, released from QPR and scored 2 in 8 for Bury in a losing cause last season. Richard O'Donnell has been brought in to fill the vacant goalkeeping position at Walsall, with many loanees tried and tested last season. O'Donnell another looking for a steady home after many loan spells around various football league clubs.

Walsall will have to find a way of dealing with the loss of such class players. How they deal with that will be the way the way their season shapes up. I believe they too could be in for a struggle at the wrong end of the table.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Wolves faithful have been disgusted with their club
over the last two seasons.
Last but certainly not least, the boys in gold, the men from Molineux.  What a time that club has had. After a record breaking two seasons, not seen for almost a quarter of a century, Wolves find themselves in the third tier of English football, with a horrible run of form, managers come and go, Wolves first need to consolidate, which they have done with the impressive appointment of Kenny Jackett, a good manager with experience at a higher level.

With the sudden drop, departures were always going to be hard to avoid, with the releasing of goalkeepers Marian Kello and Dorus De Vries, defender Christophe Berra, midfielders Adam Hammill, Stephen Hunt, Eggert Jonsson and Karl Henry. However Wolves did manage to get some money in return for Hammill and Henry. Also to go were strikers Sam Winall and fans' favourite Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
Wolves' players couldn't believe the collapse of
the Molineux club

However still with the huge parachute payments from the Premier league, they have been able to retain Wayne Hennessey, Geroge Elokobi, Richard Stearman, SPL star man Leigh Griffiths, Bakary Sako, Tongo Doumbia, Kevin Doyle, Stephen Ward, Roger Johnson and Jamie O'Hara, and they have added former Bolton full-back Sam Ricketts.

Due to this, I am with many others that say this squad will be far too much for any team in League One, and therefore I expect Wolves to win League One and seal a return back to the Championship at the first attempt.  As long as the squad to not become cocky and take it for granted, as even for players with this quality, it will not be a complete walk in the park.

Conclusion

In conclusion I firmly believe we are in for another enthralling League One season, with ups and downs along the way, and certain for surprises, it's impossible to call who will go up, but we can have a good guess who will be up and around there.  It is just as hard to predict who will slip through the trap door. But I'm certainly looking forward to it!
